Detailed
description and pictorial study of Sampler
|
MOVE TO:
1790 Sampler by Sarah Munday.
George III, dated 1790. 8ins by 16ins. 1790 Sampler by Sarah Munday.
Framed in a modern wooden frame with glass.
Loose mounted onto a cardboard backing.
The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-9.
Verse reads 'One thig (sic) have I desired of the Lord that will I seek after that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life to behold the beauty of the Lord and to enquire in his temple.'.
Signed and dated "Sarah Munday: September the 9: Wrought in the 12 year of her age: 1790".
The sampler is worked in fine silk threads throughout.
Red, green, copper, silver, pink and gold colour threads used.
A set of typical sampler motifs, including flowers, a fruit basket with birds perched on top, fir trees, crowns and lions with crowns on their heads.
CONDTION: Slightly distressed.
After removing the sampler from the frame we discovered the sampler has been folded over just above the middle section, and a portion has been folded behind the rest of the sampler and stitched along the strawberry divider line. This repair is old, and was carried out because there is a large hole, about 4ins in size in the 'missing' section.
One small 5mm hole/frey to the centre, illustrated.
A few slight patchy stains. No stitch losses.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
No colour run. Slight stretching, worst illustrated.
The frame is in very good condition
and the sampler is ready to hang.
