1851 sampler by Harriet Crowther

1851 sampler by Harriet Crowther. 1851. 49ins wide 49ins in height. Framed in a massive good quality, old, wooden frame with rippled and dimpled old glass.

Tacked to a mounting frame and with paper backing.

Worked in a variety of stitches. Deligtfully misspelt verse reads (sic) 'the rose is rad the levs r/ Green the days are Past that i/ have seen this Peace of wo/rk I hOPe you save When I/ Am dead and in my Grave/ the Year of our lord 1851.

Signed "Harriet Crowther work aged 17 years". The sampler is worked in mainly in wool with cream, blue, red, yellow, green, light brown, dark brown, black, pink, and black cotton for the verse.
Packed with interesting rural Victorian motifs, including farmer carrying birds, rabbits, birds, dog,

cupids, flowers,

and farmers wife and daughter.

CONDTION: Good. No holes. No stains. One pulled thread above the dog.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. Colour run to the black coloured cotton threads in the verse, worst illustrated. Frame has two minor losses to the veneer,

minor dings and dents and could do with re-varnishing, otherwise in very good condition.
