Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

George III, dated 1789. 11.75ins by 15.25ins. 1789 Sampler by Betsy Croome Aged 9.

Framed in a contemporary 18thC beaten iron frame, decorated with acanthus leaves and ribbing. The work of an armourer or high class local blacksmith.

Glass Cover. Tacked to a wooden board from the sideswith a card backing.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and numbers 1-7.

Verse reads 'You, whose fond Wishes do to Heaven aspire, Who make those blest Abode you Sole Desire, If you are wise and hope that Bliss to gain, Use well your Time, live not an Hour in vain: Let not the Morrow your vain Thoughts employ. But think this Day the last you shall enjoy.'.

Signed and dated ''Betsy Croome Aged nine Years Anno Domini 1789'.

Meandering strawberry border.

Wonderful divider lines in various floral patterns.

The sampler is worked in fine silk thread throughout.

Pink, copper, silver, black, green and gold colour threads used.

A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants, fruit baskets, birds and flowers.

 

CONDTION: Very Good.

Two small 5mm holes, one in the top centre

one in the bottom border,

one in middle right

and the other in the bottom centre, illustrated.

One small dark 5mm stain in the middle right hand side, illustrated.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading.

The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen.

No colour run.

Frame has some wear and has split very slightly in the bottom right hand corner, illustrated
