1848 sampler by Sarah Burgess
Victorian, dated 1848. 12.5ins by 12ins wide. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass. Loose mounted over a board with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours black, cream, gold, blue and green. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-15.
Verse reads
'Oh may I heavenly treasure find
and choose the better part
Give me a humble pious mind
a meek and lowry heart'.

Signed and dated 'Sarah Burgess Aged 14 Years January 18 1848'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a windmill,

dogs,

birds,

fruit baskets and flowering trees.

CONDITION: Good. A few holes and loss of ground to top edge, illustrated.

Two stains, illustrated.

No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing some wear, worst illustrated, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
