1867 Sampler by Caroline Roake

Victorian, dated 1867. 16.25ins by 15.5ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, dimpled, old glass. Fixed to card with wood and brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in cotton and wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.

Divider lines in various patterns. Colours blue, cream, green, light brown, beige and grey. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-9

Short aphorisms read

' Be ?anory and s????? God is love',

'God is love,'

Verse reads

'Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt

find it after many days. Pray without ceasing'

 

'Children obey your parents in the lord'.

Signed and dated

'Caroline Roake Chertsey June 7th 1867'.

CONDITION: Very Good. No holes. No stains. No stitch losses. Some colours faded making them difficult to read. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame showing slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and in our opinion ready to hang.
