MOVE TO:
Scottish Sampler by Ann Findlay, circa 1840
Scottish Sampler by Ann Findlay. Victorian, circa 1840. 16ins by 8ins. Loose, unframed.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case, numbers 1-10 and family initials AF JF EM Z[deliberate hole - I'll bet the surname initial was torn out in a fit of passion following a feud in the clan!] HS RF EF RF IF JM EM JF JF JG WF CF AF [I'll bet that's Ann Findlay] EF JC CC.

Worked in cross stitch throughout. Signed simply "Ann Findlay".

Simple embroidered border. The sampler is worked in cotton throughout. Red, cream, blue, yellow, light brown, dark brown, gold, black, pink, purple, magenta, pale blue and green colour threads used. A good set of motifs, including fruit baskets, flowers, blossoming trees, hearts, roses, stags and a central peacock.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed but bright and interesting. One hole, less than 0.25 inches in size, in the centre. This hole is, I feel, deliberate obliteration of the surname initial. No stains. Extensive stitch losses to the border, divider lines and letters/numbers, illustrated. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run.
