1848 sampler by Mary Janes

Victorian, dated 1848. 17.5ins by 13.25ins wide. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood and gilt frame with rippled, old glass. Mounted over a wood stretcher frame with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in a silk-like thread on linen ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colors blue, cream, green, copper and light brown. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase.

Verse reads

'Heavenly Teacher from Thy ways
Who can tell how oft he strays
Fill our Souls with holy light
Guide O guide our steps aright'

Signed and dated 'Mary Janes Aged 12 Years March 1848'.

A good set of motifs, including butterflies,

dogs,

potted flowering plants, trees laden with fruit,

a fruit basket, trees,

crowns,

various types of bird

and lions.

CONDITION: Good. No holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

No stitch losses. Colors are slightly faded, but still well defined. No color run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and in our opinion ready to hang.
