Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

1806 Adam & Eve Sampler by Elizabeth Moses.

George III, dated 1806. 12.5ins by 17ins. 1806 Adam & Eve Sampler by Elizabeth Moses.

Framed in an old, possibly original, Hogarth frame with glass.

Glued around the extreme edges only, not at all visible from the front onto a card backing.

A Verse entitled 'A HYMN' reads

'Our God is the Father of all, The father of mercies and love, He pities the works of his hands, Tho he reigns in the heavens above. Not a sparrow can fall to the ground, withou his permission and care, from such a kind father and friend, Then what has children to fear. We have nothing to fear but from sin, It is sin that displeases our god, When we disobey his commands, Like a father he uses the rod. Tis needful for you who are young, To remember the god whom you love, To serve him and worship him here, And dwell in his presence above.' and below 'To my ever Honoured Parents'.

Signed and dated ''Elizabeth Moses Her Work Aged 12 Born June 15. 1806. Paington".

Place name Paington is mentioned. This is a little town on the South Coast of England, Devon, near to Torquay.

Meandering strawberry border.

The sampler is worked in fine silk thread throughout.

Red, copper, silver, green and gold colour threads used.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life, a snake coiled around its trunk,

lions, birds, flowers, blossoming trees, fruit baskets and potted flowering plants.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed.

A few repaired holes, less than 1.25inches in size.

The repairs (illustrated) are located in the top middle, in the bottom right hand side, in the middle right hand side and the and in the middle left hand side of the sampler.

There are also a eight or so small 5mm holes in various places, illustrated.

The holes and repairs blend quite well into the backing colour.

No stains. No stitch losses.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run. No stretching.

Frame has a 0.5ins chip to the black, illustrated,

but is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang.
