Religious sampler Christ carrying cross

Religious sampler Christ carrying cross. Victorian, circa 1850. 14.7ins by 22ins. Framed in an old, possibly original frame with rippled, old glass, and gilt slip. The frame is of a hard molded ceramic like material on a wood base.

Sampler is tacked onto a wood mounting frame with just a plain linen backing. Worked in a variety of stitches.

Verse reads 'His visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men. - Isaiah 52 chap.

And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha Where they crucified him - John 19 chap.

The picture is worked in wool throughout with a deep wool dividing line and the verses in black silk, possibly cotton thread.

CONDTION: Very Good. No holes. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. No colour run. Slight darkening of the ground behind the verse from ingress of dust and atmosphere but no patchy staining.

The frame has some wear, illustrated, but is structurally sound. A sampler ready to hang.
