MOVE TO:
1857 needlework sampler by Mary Liddell

1857 needlework sampler by Mary Liddell. Victorian. 16ins by 16.5ins. Framed in an old, possibly original, black stained pine frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked onto a wooden mounting frame. The sampler has alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 123. Worked in cross stitch and algerian eye.

Verse reads 'Favour is deceitful and Beauty is vain, But a woman that Feareth the Lord, She shall be praised. Remember Lots Wife'. What a lesson!! Signed and dated "Mary Liddell her Work 1857. Margaret Penman, Teacher, Preston". Preston is a town in the North West of England.

In addition to the signature Mary has embroidered the initials of her family dotted around 'TL, ML, RL, HL, JL, JL, JL'.

The sampler is worked in cotton and wool threads. Red, cream, blue, yellow, light brown, gold, magenta, pale green and pink colour threads used.

A wonderful set of motifs, including stars, a peacock,
a chained lion, birds, trees, laden with fruit, four sweet little sheep, trees, blossoming trees, hearts, crowns, flowering trees and an amazing central bird.

One unusual motif remains to be mentioned - could it be a wine glass?

CONDTION: Very Good. No holes. Darkening of the ground around the border from ingress of dust and atmosphere. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.

Meandering strawberry border. Two tack heads just visible. Frame has some wear and scratches, worst illustrated, but is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang. Easily removed from mounting frame if required to be shipped loose, unframed.
