Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

1802 House Sampler by Rebekah Ilott

George III, dated 1802. 17.5ins by 12ins wide. Unframed, loose.

Alphabet A-Z in uppercase. Worked in a variety of stitches. Verse reads 'My child attend the word of truth Remember thy Creator in thy youth. Before the days of pale adversity appear And age and sorrow fill the gloomy year'.

Meandering strawberry border.

Signed 'Rebekah Ilot finished this August 11 1802'.

The sampler is worked in silk thread throughout. Green, light brown, copper, gold, pink and cream colour threads used.

A good set of motifs, including a house with dogs,

birds, and flowers in baskets either side, stars,

fleur de lys, and fruit baskets,

with Rebekah's initials 'RI' boldly framed, centre top.

CONDTION: Good. No holes other than the tack holes and damage around the extremity, mostly outside the border.

One dark stain above and to the left of the house, and all around the border. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticable fading. The silks still have their original bright glossy sheen. Colour run in the bottom left hand corner, not detracting.

No stretching.
