Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

MOVE TO:

1839 Verse sampler by Eliza Davies.

Early Victorian, dated 1839. 12.5ins by 12ins. 1839 Verse sampler by Eliza Davies.

Framed in an old, possibly original, Hogarth frame with glass. Loose mounted onto a chipboard backing.

The sampler has alphabets A-Z in lowercase.

Signed and dated ''Eliza Davies her work 1839".

Meandering strawberry border.

The sampler is worked in fine wool thread throughout.

Brown, cream, yellow, green, purple, red and pink colour threads used.

A good set of motifs, including fir trees,

dogs, a variety of colourful birds,

flowers,

crowns, deer and potted flowering plants.

CONDTION: Good.

No holes. Very slight patchy staining.

A few stitch losses to motifs, the border and letters/numbers, illustrated.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run. No stretching.

Frame has very slight wear, not detracting, illustrated,

is otherwise sound and in my opinion ready to hang.
