Detailed description and pictorial study of Sampler

Victorian, dated 1882. 13.75ins by 13ins. 1882 Sampler by E.M. Wright.

Framed in an old, possibly original, wooden frame with rippled, old glass.

Glued to the reverse, around the extreme edges only, not at all visible from the front onto a wooden frame backing.

Verses read 'Alas and ? My saviour bleed And did my sovereign die Would he devote that sacred head For such a worm as I.' and 'Whatsoever thy hand Findeth to do do it With All thy might.'.

Signed and dated "Elizabeth Mary Wright Aged 12 1882".

Simple line border.

The sampler is worked in wool threads throughout.

Pink, cream, yellow, green, light brown, red and pale blue colour threads used.

A set of typical sampler motifs, including fruit baskets,

stars, dogs, potted flowering plants,

fir trees, birds and butterflies.

CONDTION: Slightly distressed.

A small patch of very slight holing.

Uniform darkening of the backing canvas.

A few stitch losses to the verse and divider lines, illustrated.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run. No stretching.

The frame has a lot of wear and chips, illustrated,

but is structurally sound.
