MOVE TO:

c1840 House/Tablet Sampler by Mary Silver Aged 9

Victorian, circa 1840. 12.25ins by 8.25ins wide. Available unframed, as above

or loose mounted on card framed in a simple black wood frame with glass on card backing.

Worked in cross stitch throughout. Meandering strawberry border. The sampler is worked in cotton-like thread throughout. Copper, cream, beige, light brown, dark brown, pink and red colour threads used.

Verses, one in each tablet, read 'Jesu Permit Thy Gracious name to (sic) fiand As the first efforts of a Infants hand And while her Fingers on the Canvas wove Engage her, and 'Tender heart to seek thy Love and with Thy dear Children let her Have a part And write thy name thy self Upon her heart'.

Signed 'Mary Silver Aged 9 Years'.

One magnificent mansion house motif wth bird perched on one side, girl and kitten on the other

CONDTION: Slightly distressed. A number of holes, less than 0.125 inches in size, the worst in the bottom RH corner of the RH tablet, and damage near the middle right hand border, worst illustrated.

The holes blend nicely into a sympathetic backing colour. No stains other than where dirt and atmosphere have got in around border. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. No stretching. The frame is simple but in reasonable condition and the sampler could be hung 'as is', if supplied framed, loose mounted.
