1809 Silkwork Sampler by Harriot Hougeur
George III, dated 1809. 25.25ins by 21ins wide. 1809 Silkwork Sampler by Harriot Hougeur. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with card dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours dark green, cream, black, pink, light green, brown and gold.
Signed and dated
'Harriot Hougeur Her Work in the 13 the Year of her Age 1809'.
Packed with motifs, including flowers,
birds,
potted flowering plants,
fruit baskets, fir trees,
stags
and a lion.
Provenance: the sampler was originally purchased in the Channel Islands, before travelling to Scotland, and then onto us. We believe the stitcher was from the Channel Islands.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes. A few stains and slight water staining along the bottom edge.
No stitch losses.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.
Slight colour run in bottom left corner, coinciding with the water staining.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
