1825 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Mary Woodgate

George IV, dated May 5th 1825. 14.25ins by 12.25ins wide. 1825 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Mary Woodgate. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass and hanging ring at the top.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours green, pale blue, light brown, copper, white, pale pink, light green, cream, olive green and dark blue.

Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-3.

Verse reads

'In Books, or Work, or healthful Play ,

Let my first Years be past,

That I may give for ev'ry Day

Some good Account at last'.

Signed and dated

'Elizabeth Mary Woodgate May 5th 1825'.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including birds, flowers,

a fruit tree,

crowns,

hearts, diamonds,

insects

and a potted flowering plant.

CONDITION: Generally Good. A number of small holes, and a repair.

A number of stains.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
