1840 Sampler by Harriot Tarring
Victorian, dated August 1840. 21.5ins by 17.5ins wide. 1840 Sampler by Harriot Tarring. Framed in a modern wood and gilt frame with glass.
Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.
The sampler is worked in cotton on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral border.
Colours green, blue, brown and cream.
Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-15.
Verse reads
'Let me walk with Christ below,
In his likeness daily grow;
Follow him and run my race,
Daily nourished by his grace.
Within me Lord thy Spirit place
Conveying health and peace and power
And let me daily grow in grace,
That I may love and serve thee more'.
Signed and dated
'HARRIOT TARRING Finished This Sampler August 1840'.
A few motifs including flowers, birds,
diamonds
and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good. Three holes.
A few stains.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame showing slight wear and has a couple of scratches at the bottom, otherwise sound.
