1859 Sampler by Martha Hammond

Victorian, dated 1859. 12.5ins high by 9.75ins wide. Framed in an old restained wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering leafy border, divider lines in various patterns.

Colours gold and red. Alphabets A-Z in uppercase and lower case with numbers 1-9.

A Verse entitled

'Jesus. A. Friend'

reads 'One there is above all others,

Well deserves the name of friend,

His is love beyond a brother's,

Costly, free, and knows no end.

They who once his goodness prove,

Find it everlasting love.'.

Signed and dated

'Martha Hammond Aged 13 1859'.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of holes.

  

   

  

Slight staining and uniform age darkening to the ground.

 

Minor stitch losses to one of the divider lines.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition.
