1798 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Harrison

George III, dated 1798. 17ins by 12.25ins wide. Professionally framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass.

Glued around the edges only to chipboard with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Wonderful floral border.

Colours light green, pale blue, copper, gold, silver, black, cream and magenta.

Verse reads

'Let Children that would fear the Lord,

Hear what their Teachers say;

With Reverance meet their Parents Word,

And with delight obey.'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Ann Harrison Aged 10 Years Spalding 1798'. Spalding is a town in Lincolnshire, England.

A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including flowers and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Good. No holes. A couple of pale stains, illustrated, and glue stains in corners, illustrated.

No stitch losses.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Unevenly stretched, illustrated.

Frame showing very slight wear, illustrated, otherwise sound and ready to hang.
