Circa 1850 Sampler by Sarah Yates

Victorian, circa 1850. 18ins by 17.5ins wide. Framed in a modern, gilt over wood, frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours grey, cream, navy blue, pale blue, gold, black, dark green and pale green.

Verse reads

'Behold the beauty of yon damask rose

Joy of the eye in gaudy pride it blows

The setting sun shall see its bloom decy

And all its boasted beauties fade away

The envious thorns its fragrant leaves surround'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

a lion,

dogs,

birds,

a cockerel,

a house,

angels,

crowns,

fir trees,

a shepherd and shepherdess,

flowers,

and a potted flowering plant.

CONDITION: Generally good. One large hole to top right corner, and a smaller hole to bottom right corner, both illustrated.

Some tack holes to extreme edges down both sides, some with staining, worst illustrated.

A number of patchy stains, illustrated.

One dark stain to top right corner, illustrated.

Some stitch losses to holed area of border and flower motif, illustrated.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition.
