1850 African Map Sampler

Victorian, dated 1850. 17.5ins by 21ins wide. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

The map sampler itself is stitched to a piece of blue linen (creating a clever effect whereby the sea looks blue), and then mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Colours black, green, pale blue, light brown, gold, light green, blue and magenta.

Depicts a map of Africa with its surrounding islands and oceans/seas, entitled 'AFRICA WITH ALL ITS STATES REGIONS ISLANDS 1850'.

Border is stitched with numbers representing degrees of latitude and degrees of longitude.

CONDITION: Good. A few small holes.

No stains.

Some stitch losses to the black lettering.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven due to the sampler being stitched to the blue backing linen.

Frame in very good condition.
