1837 Silkwork Sampler by Ann Swatton

Victorian, dated 1837. 11.75ins by 12ins wide. Framed in an old rosewood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours light green, cream, dark brown, copper, gold and dark brown.

Verse reads

'Jesus permit thy gracious Name to stand

As the first efforts of an infants hand

And while her fingers on the canvas move

Engage her tender heart to seek thy love

With thy dear children let her have a part

And write thy name thy self upon her heart

My duty first unto the Lord I owe

For daily mercies which he does bestow

And for my great redeemers sake who gave

His life a ransom sinners for to save

My duty to my parents next is due

Whose good advise with pleasure I'll persue

Respect with meekness let me ever bind

Friendships my duty unto all mankind'.

Signed and dated 'Ann Swatton 1837'.

A good set of motifs, including potted flowering plants,

dogs,

flowers,

fir trees

birds perched on branches

and stars.

CONDITION: Good. A couple of holes, one of which has been repaired, illustrated.

Two pale patchy stains, illustrated.

Minor stitch losses to the border and a couple of the flower motifs, illustrated.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame showing some wear, illustrated, otherwise sound.
