1788 Sampler by Mary Smith
George III, dated 1788. 14.5ins by 15.75ins wide. 1788 Sampler by Mary Smith. Framed in a modern, ebonised wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with card backing.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering floral and strawberry border.
Colours black, cream, yellow, green, navy blue, copper, gold, pink, light green, pale blue and red.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case, numbers 1-12 and family names and initials.
Verse reads
'Our Father Which art in Heaven Hallowed be thy name thy Kin
gdom cometh, Will be done in earth as it is in Heaven Give us
this day our daily bread and Forgive us our Trespass As We
Forgive them that Trespass against us And lead us not
into Temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the amen
kingdom and the Power and the glory for ever and ever'.

Signed and dated
'Mary Smith Her Sampler 1788'.
A good set of motifs, including birds, flowers
sailing ship,
dogs, crown, diamonds, insects and fir trees.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.
Some patchy stains.
Some stitch losses to the border, divider lines, alphabets, numbers, verse and motifs.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.
No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
