1831 Silkwork Sampler by Julia Elizabeth Stevens

William IV, dated November 20th 1831. 20.75ins by 8.5ins wide. 1831 Silkwork Sampler by Julia Elizabeth Stevens. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Glued around the edges only, to card with wooden backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.

No border, divider lines in various patterns.

Colours gold, cream, light blue and green.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-7.

Verse reads

'In cruel sport Ill not

engage Nor join in idle

play Lest in the sunset

of my age I mourn the

wasted day'.

Signed and dated

'Julia Elizabeth Stevens November the 20th 1831'.

A few motifs including flowers,

stars,

a heart,

diamond

and crowns.

CONDITION: Good.

One tiny hole.

A few stain specks.

Minor stitch losses to the divider lines, lower case letter q and verse.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
