Victorian, dated 1837. 22.5ins by 22ins wide. 1837 Sampler by Margaret Schofield. Framed in a modern wood and gilt frame with glass.

Loose mounted over chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours red, blue, pale green, white, black, pink, light green, orange, olive green and magenta.

Verse reads

'There is my house and portion fair

my treasure and my heart are there

and my abiding home

for me my elder brethren stay

and angels beckon me away

and Jesus bids me come'.

'rise dear shepheades let us go and seek our tender flocks

and stay not shelterin here benethe this only cot

if we our tender lames neglect our lord and saviour will not respect us'.

Signed and dated

'Margaret Schofield Work 1837'.

A good set of motifs, including a red brick house with shepherds, dogs and sheep on the front lawn,

trees,

birds,

angels,

fruit trees, fir trees

and flowers.

CONDITION: Fair.

Several holes.

Some patchy staining.

No stitch losses.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven, and the left hand border is very slightly hidden behind the frame edge.

Frame showing some wear and has a few chips, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
