2 piece 1822 Silkwork Sampler by Jane Gidley

George IV, dated March 2 1822. 6.5ins by 12.5ins and 6.5ins by 13ins. 2 piece 1822 Sampler by Jane Gidley. Originally, these would have been joined together as one sampler. For some reason, the sampler has been cut in half, but thankfully, they remain together. Framed in old, burr maple frames with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Loose mounted over linen and wadding with wooden backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours blue, cream, dark green, pale blue, light brown, dark brown, pink and olive green.

Inscription reads

'William and Jane Gidley's

Daughters names

Jane Gidley, Peggy Gidley,

Ann Gidley, Mary Gidley.'

Verse reads

'And am b??horn to die

To lay this body down

And must my trembling spirit

fly, into a world unknown

all my trust on thee is stay

all my help from thee I bring

With humble heart and Tongue

Great god to thee we pray,

O may we learn while we are young

To walk in wisdom way,

saviour to my heart be near

Exercise the shepherds care

Guard my weakness by thy

grace. Let me feel a constant

peace

Cover my defenceless head

with the shadow of thy win??'.

Signed and dated

'Jane Gidley's Work March 2 1822'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

a lion, dogs,

flowers,

rabbit,

fruit tree,

hearts, crown,

potted flowering plants,

fruit basket

and birds (some in cages).

CONDITION: Fair.

A number of holes and some loss around the edges.

A few light, patchy stains and a couple of dark stains.

Some stitch losses to the inscription, verse and one motif.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frames showing some wear, but structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
