1782 Sampler by Hannah Twain
George III, dated 1782. 10.75ins by 12.5ins wide. 1782 Sampler by Hannah Twain. Framed in an old 'molded composition over wood' frame with rippled, old glass.

Loose mounted over paper with chipboard backing and brown paper dust cover.
The sampler is worked in silk and cotton on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.
Simple line border.
Colours pale green, olive green, cream, blue, dark green, pale blue, light brown, dark pink, pale pink and yellow.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case.
Verse reads
'MODESTY makes large amends for the
Pain it gives the Persons who labour under
it by the Prejudice it affords every worthy
person in their Favour.'.
Signed and dated
'Hannah Twain her sampler 1782'.
A good set of motifs, including birds,
flowers,
blossoming trees,
fir trees
and dogs.
CONDITION: Generally Good.
A number of holes and some loss of ground to the top edge.
No stains.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
Unevenly stretched.
Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound and ready to hang.
