1842 Sampler by Sarah Elizabeth Brooke

Victorian, dated 1842. 17ins by 16.5ins wide. 1842 Sampler by Sarah Elizabeth Brooke. Framed in an old wood frame with glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours red, cream, pale blue, copper, pink, orange, magenta, black and light green.

Verse reads

'No glory I covet no riches I want

Ambition is nothing to me

The one thing I beg of good Heaven to grant

Is a mind independent and free'.

Signed

'Sarah Elizabeth Brooke's Work in the 11th year of her age'.

Dated '1842'.

A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden,

figures, dogs,

birds,

fir trees, diamonds, crowns,

flowers,

heart

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Good.

Ground is wearing thin between two birds.

Stain at the bottom.

Very minor stitch loss to the border.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
