1839 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Rope

Victorian, dated December 1839. 15.5ins by 14.5ins wide. 1839 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Rope. Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours olive green, dark brown, gold, magenta and light green.

Inscription reads

'Fear God and keep his laws'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Ann Rope Aged 10 Years Finished Her Work in December 1839'.

A good set of motifs, including birds,

potted flowering plants,

crowns

and flowers.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of small holes.

A number of stains.

Stitch losses to the border, inscription, divider lines, motifs and signature.

Colours are faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
