1842 Sampler 'The Nosegay' by Mary Catley

Victorian, dated 1842. 18.75ins by 17.25ins wide. 1842 Sampler 'The Nosegay' by Mary Catley. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Stitched to card with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in fine wool on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours red, dark green, light brown, dark brown, gold, black, light green, orange, maroon and pink.

Verse reads

'Thou seest my weakness lord

My heart if known to thee

O lift thou up the sinking hand

Confirm the feeble knee

Let me in life in death

thy steadfast truth declare

And publish with my latest breath

Thy love and guardian care'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Catley's Work Aged 12 Years 1842'.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

flowers, potted flowering plants, birds,

a bouquet of flowers tied with a ribbon

and fir trees.

CONDITION: Good. No holes.

A few stains around the edge.

Very minor stitch loss to the verse.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
