Pair 1789 & 1791 Gatenby Sister Samplers

George III, dated 1789 and 1791. 16.75ins by 9.25ins wide & 15.5ins by 10.5ins wide. Pair 1789 & 1791 Gatenby Sister Samplers. Framed in old mahogany veneer frames with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to wood with brown paper dust covers.

The samplers are worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry borders (unfinished on Jane's sampler).

Colours olive green, cream, green, dark brown, silver, black, pink, light green, copper and white.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case, numbers 1-20, and family names and initials.

The verse of Elizabeth's sampler reads

'Despair Of Nothing that You

Would Attain Unweary &

Vigilence Your Point Will Gain'.

Signed and dated

'ELIZABETH GATENBY HER WORK FINISHED APRIL 21 1789'.

The verse of Jane's sampler reads

'go on my dear

strive to excell

in prove in work

and reading well

for book and nee

dle both commend

to make a house

wife and a friend'.

Signed and dated

'Jane Gatenby Her Work Anno Domini 1791'.

A good set of motifs, including flowers,

dogs,

fruit trees,

fruit baskets,

squirrels,

hearts,

crowns,

birds

and stags.

CONDITION: Good. No holes. No stitch loss.

Elizabeth: A few small stains and uniform age darkening of the ground.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Colour run around the black threads.

Jane: A few small stains.

Very slight fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven on both.

Frames showing slight wear, but otherwise sound and ready to hang.
