1822 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Harris
George IV, dated February 27 1822. 15.75ins by 12.5ins wide. 1822 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Harris.
Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with rippled, old glass.
Metal hanging hook at top of frame.
Backed with paper, edges glued to the reverse of a wooden stretcher frame.
Brown paper dust cover to reverse.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.
Meandering floral border.
Colours olive green, dark brown, copper, black, pink, light green, green and gold.
Alphabet A-Z in upper case.
Verse reads
'For God approves the just Man's Ways,
to Happiness they tend;
But sinners, and the Paths they tread
shall both in Ruin end.'.
Signed and dated
'Sarah Harris February 27 1822'.
A good set of motifs, including a flower basket,
butterflies,
fruit tree,
birds,
flowers and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally good.
A number of holes.
No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
Slight colour run around the black threads.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and could be hung 'as is'.
