Large 1845 Sampler by Elizabeth Greenwood
Victorian, dated 1845. 23ins by 23ins wide. Large 1845 Sampler by Elizabeth Greenwood. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Tacked to wood with brown paper dust cover.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering floral border.
Colours olive green, cream, green, copper, white, pink, light green, red and black.
Verse reads
'Beset with snares on every hand
In life's uncertain path I stand
Saviour Divine diffuse thy light
To guide my douptful footsteps right
Engage this roving treacherous heart
Great God to choose a better part
To scorn the trifles of a day
For joys that none can take away
If Thou my Saviour still art nigh.
Cheerful I live . and peaceful die
Secure . when earthly comforts flee
To find eternal joys in Thee'.
Inscription reads
'Perfect Love is From Above'.
Signed and dated
'Elizabeth Greenwood Aged 12 1845'.
A wonderful set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,
dogs, birds, angels,
peacocks,
flowers, fruit trees,
rabbits,
squirrels,
hearts,
Jesus on the cross with a lady standing on either side,
two churches,
butterflies, a bee,
potted flowering plants
and fruit baskets.
CONDITION: Good.
No holes.
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.
Colour run around the black threads.
Stretching is very slightly uneven.
Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
