Circa 1830 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Bryant

Circa 1830. 15ins by 12ins wide. Circa 1830 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Bryant.

Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours black, blue, light brown, dark brown, copper, silver, light green, magenta, dark green and gold.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-21.

Verse reads

'Thy providence my life sustain'd

And all my wants redress'd.

When in the silent womb I lay

And hung upon the breast.

Unnumber'd comforts to my soul

Thy tender care bestow'd

Before my infant heart conceiv'd

From whom those comforts flow'd'.

Signed 'Mary Bryant'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a posy of flowers,

an eagle,

stags,

deer,

fruit baskets,

squirrels,

crowns,

a heart,

fruit trees,

birds,

butterflies

and dogs.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

Several holes.

A few patchy stains and slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Some colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Some colour run around the green threads.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
