Large 1829 Sampler by Ann Grant
George IV, dated 1829. 22.5ins by 21ins wide. Large 1829 Sampler by Ann Grant.
Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.
Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with linen and brown paper dust cover.
The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch and Algerian eye.
Meandering floral border.
Colours red, pale blue, gold, pink, olive green and black.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case.
Verse reads
'In the soft season of thy youth
In natures smiling bloom
Ere age arrive and trembling wait
Its summons to the tomb.
Remember your creator God
For him your powers employ
Make him your fear your love your hope
Your confidence and joy'.
Signed and dated
'Ann Grant work'd this sampler in the 10th Year of her age 1829'.
A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a garden, butterfly, diamond, stars,
the sun, fir trees, fruit trees, birds,
stags, an insect, gentleman with a stick and potted flowering plants.
CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes.
A few dark stains along the left side, and uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses.
Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.
The silks remain bright and glossy.
Colour run around the black threads.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame showing slight wear,
otherwise sound and ready to hang.
