Large 1818 Castle Sampler by Mary Smith

George III, dated 1818. 25ins by 16.75ins wide. Large 1818 Castle Sampler by Mary Smith. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in cotton and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours red, blue, green, black, magenta, olive green, brown and cream.

Verse entitled 'A VERSE' reads

'Lord at thy feet ashm'd I lie

Upward I dare not look

Pardon my sins before I die

And blot them from thy book'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Smith,s Work 1818'.

A good set of motifs, including a large, red brick castle with stags, dogs and animals in the grounds, stars,

flowers, fir trees,

potted flowering plants,

fruit basket, birds,

hearts

and a diamond.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of old tack holes with staining visible along the top edge.

No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to the border.

Some colours are slightly faded.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
