1788 Silkwork Sampler by Ann Beedzler

George III, dated 1788. 15ins by 12.5ins wide. 1788 Silkwork Sampler by Ann Beedzler. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering floral border.

Colours light blue, green, copper, gold, black, magenta and cream.

Aphorism reads

'Honour thy Father and thy Mother. that thy days may

Be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.'.

Verse reads

'Let me be wise in youth . O Lord . that so

I safe may tread the way I ought to go :

Lead me . and learn me what is right and Just

For in thy Help . my God I Place my Trust.'.

Aphorisms read

'Content is all we aim at with our store.

And having that with little need no more.'.

'This is to Let you know and see

Signed and dated

'Ann Beedzler Aged 13 years 1788'.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

a crowned lion, birds, flowers,

fruit baskets

and potted fir trees.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of holes.

Some loss of ground around the edges.

Slight staining along the top edge.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
