1812 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Clark

George III, dated March 25 1812. 19.5ins by 15.25ins wide. 1812 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Clark.

Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours black, cream, light blue, pink, light green, gold and olive green.

Verse reads

'You, whose fond wishes do to heaven aspire,

Who make those blest abodes your sole desire,

If you are wise, and hope that bliss to gain,

Use well your time, live not an hour in vain:

Let not the morrow your vain thoughts employ

But think this day the last you shall enjoy.'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Clarks Work March 25 1812'.

A good set of motifs, including a house surrounded by trees with a dog tied to a fruit tree in the garden,

lions, flowers,

birds and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

No holes.

No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.

No stitch losses.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

Colour run around the black threads.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
