1835 Sampler by Sarah Bell

William IV, dated October 16 1835. 16.75ins by 15.75ins wide. 1835 Sampler by Sarah Bell.

Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass.

Tacked to a wood stretcher frame with paper backing and brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in fine wool and silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Border hidden behind frame.

Colours black, white, pink, purple, light green, light brown, maroon and red.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-10.

Verse reads

'Lord give me wisdom to direct my ways,

I ask not riches nor yet length of days

This piece of work my friends may have

when I am dead and in my grave'.

Signed and dated

'Sarah Bell finished this work in the 13th Year of her AGE . Octr.16.1835'.

A good set of motifs, including a house, rabbits, fruit trees,

flowers, a fruit basket, squirrels,

blossoming trees, a boat and lions standing under a fruit tree.

CONDITION: Generally Good. No holes. No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to letters of the alphabets,

divider lines

and motifs.

Colours are faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing very slight wear,

otherwise sound and ready to hang.
