1838 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth England

Victorian, dated 1838. 17.25ins by 12.5ins wide. 1838 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth England. Framed in an old, possibly original, mahogany frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Stitched to card with chipboard backing. Metal hanging hook to the reverse.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours dark green, cream, blue, dark brown, copper, black, light green and gold.

Verse entitled 'THE ROSE' reads

'How sweet the budding rose appears

Amidst the dew at dawn of morn

But sweeter far the child whose years ,

The ways of virtue's paths adorn .

May I adorn the doctrine of God my

Saviour in all things'.

Signed and dated

'Elizabeth England Aged 10 Years 1838'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a large bowl of flowers,

fruit trees,

fruit baskets,

trees,

birds perched on branches

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of holes.

No stains.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

Very slight colour run around the black threads of the verse.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and ready to hang.
