1838 Silkwork Sampler by Caroline Dowdeswell Corner

Victorian, dated July 1st 1838. 16ins by 12ins wide. 1838 Silkwork Sampler by Caroline Dowdeswell Corner. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering floral border.

Colours gold, olive green, copper, white, light green, dark brown and pink.

Signed and dated

'Caroline Dowdeswell Corner Her Work July 1st 1838'.

A wonderful set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, dogs,

a bull with a flag,

peacocks below a fruit tree,

butterflies, insects,

fir trees, birds,

a hen with five chicks,

a house,

potted flowering plant

and a steam boat with smoke coming out the funnel.

CONDITION: Good.

A number of small holes.

Some staining at the top, and a stain line of in the centre.

No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.

Colours are slightly faded, but the silks are still bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
