1863 Silkwork Sampler by Jane Watts

Victorian, dated 1863. 13ins by 9ins wide. 1863 Silkwork Sampler by Jane Watts. Framed in an old wood frame with glass.

Stitched to linen and tacked to card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours brown, red, green, navy blue, pale blue, pink, gold and black.

Verse entitled 'A funeral thought' reads

'Hark from the tomb a dothful sound

My ears attend the cry

Ye living men come view the ground

Where you must shortly lie

Prince.s this clay must be your bed

In spite of all your towers

The high the low the revrend head

Must lie as low as ours'.

Signed and dated

'Jane Watts Her Work Age 11 1863'.

A good set of motifs, including flowers, insects, birds,

a dog,

fruit baskets

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A few small holes.

A few patchy stains.

No stitch losses.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in good condition, ready to hang.
