1838 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Foster
Victorian, dated 1838. 16ins by 17.5ins wide. 1838 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Foster. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

The edges are glued over card with wooden board backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours dark green, cream, blue, olive green, gold, light green, light brown and black.
Verse reads
'No Glory I covet no riches I want
Ambition is nothing to me
The one thinG I beG of kind heaven
To Grant is a mind independent an free'.
Signed and dated
'Elizabeth Foster 1838'.
A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, butterflies,
dogs, birds, diamonds,
hearts,
owls,
angels,
flowers,
potted flowering plants,
a fruit basket,
stags
and trees.
CONDITION: Good.
One small hole and some thinning of the ground along the top edge.
A few patchy stains, and uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame has several small chips around the edge, but is structurally sound and ready to hang.
