1820 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Holmes

George IV, dated 1820. 19.5ins by 19ins wide. 1820 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Holmes. Framed in a modern wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Stitched to linen and stretched over card with brown paper dust cover.

The sampler is worked in silk, and a small amount of wool on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours dark green, blue, dark brown, copper, gold, white, orange, light green and black.

Verse reads

'Jesus lover of my soul

Let me to thy bosom fly

While the raging billows roll

While the tempest still is high

Hide me O my Saviour hide

Till the storm of life is past

Safe into the heaven guide

O receive my soul at last'.

Signed and dated

'MARY HOLMES WORK AGED 10 YEARS 1820 RAWDEN SCHOOL'.

A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including a tiger under a tree,

stars,

dogs,

birds,

potted flowering plants, butterflies,

a fruit tree,

fruit baskets,

hearts,

crowns,

swans

and two cats on cushions.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of small holes.

A number of dark stain specks.

No stitch losses.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
