1823 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Pilkington

George IV, dated 1823. 15ins by 20.25ins wide. 1823 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Pilkington. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.

Rolling waves border.

Colours black, red, green, copper, pink, olive green and gold.

Verse reads

'How strong the ties of nature bind . how hard it is to part with wife . or child . or bosom

Friend . that twines about the heart . my God . let faith but spread to view the merits

Of thy son kind visits of thy face renew and glories of thy throne'.

Also reads

'Elizabeth Pilkington Born June 19 1814',

'Mary Pilkington Born March 2 1816'

and

'William Pilkington Born April 26 1818'.

Signed and dated

'Mary Pilkington Her Work . 1823'.

A good set of motifs, including a large estate house with coachhouse and stable block, titled 'Duxbury Hall', which is situated in Chorley, Lancashire.

Fir trees,

flowers

and potted flowering plants.

CONDITION: Good.

One hole.

One small stain and uniform age darkening of the ground.

Some stitch losses to the border and motifs.

Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.

No colour run.

Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
