1823 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Payne

George IV, dated August 8th 1823. 15.75ins by 11.75ins wide. 1823 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Payne. Framed in an old wood frame with glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye.

Meandering strawberry border.

Colours copper, cream, green, dark brown, light green, gold and pale blue.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case, and numbers 1 and 2.

Verse reads

'O May I Steal Along the Vale

Of Humble Life Secure from foes

My friend Sincere My Judgment clear

And gentle Business my Repose'.

Signed and dated

'Sarah Payne Marked this Sampler in her 10th Year August 8th 1823'.

A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk and two owls perched in the branches,

birds, flowers,

potted flowering plants,

fruit baskets,

sailing ships,

butterflies,

bird and crown on top of a column

and fir trees.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A few tiny holes.

Some holes and loss of ground along the bottom edge.

Staining along the top and down both sides.

Some stitch losses to the border and alphabet.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined.

No colour run.

Stretching is slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
