1825 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Edwards
George IV, dated November 14th 1825. 12.25ins by 12ins wide. 1825 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Ann Edwards. Framed in an old, possibly original, burr maple frame with rippled, old glass and metal hanging hook at the top.

Loose onto canvas and paper with wood backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.
Meandering strawberry border.
Colours green, blue, copper, white, light green, black, brown and cream.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10.
Verse reads
'AMONG the deepest shades of night
Can there be One who sees my way
Yes God is like a shining light
That turns the darkness into day
When evry eye around me sleeps
May I not sin without control
No for a constant watch He keeps
On evry thought on evry soul'.
Signed and dated
'Mary Ann Edwards Novemb 14th 1825'.
A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,
lions,
flowers,
a dog,
hearts, crowns, diamonds,
fruit baskets
and birds.
CONDITION: Generally Good.
A number of holes.
One stain spot to the Adam & Eve motif.
Staining along the right edge.
Pale, patchy staining behind the verse.
No stitch losses other than to the holed areas.
Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy.
No colour run.
Stretching is slightly uneven.
Frame has a chunk out at the top, otherwise structurally sound and ready to hang.
