1843 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Mitchell

Victorian, dated November 7th 1843. 17.25ins by 12.25ins wide. 1843 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Mitchell.

Framed in an old, burr maple frame with gilt slip and glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout.

Meandering floral border.

Colours dark brown, gold, light green, dark green and copper.

Alphabets A-Z in upper case.

Verse reads

'Tell me ye knowing and discerning few

Where I may find a friend both firm and true

Who dares stand by me when in deep distress

And then his love and friendship most express'.

Signed and dated

'Sarah Mitchell Finished Working this sampler nov 7th 1843 Aged 14 Years'.

A wonderful set of motifs, including a house with a garden and a cat on the fence,

birds, trees,

potted flowering plants,

stags, fir trees,

peacocks and flowers.

CONDITION: Generally Good.

A number of holes throughout.

Old tack holes just visible along the top edge.

Losses along the bottom edge.

Patchy staining around the edge.

Some stitch losses to a couple of the motifs.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading.

No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
