1832 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Tomson

William IV, dated 1832. 14.75ins by 12ins wide. 1832 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Tomson. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass.

Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing.

The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches.

Meandering strawberry border along the sides (over framed along the top and bottom edges).

Colours dark brown, cream, olive green, black, light green, gold and dark green.

Verse reads

'O Father ,I am but a child ,

My body is made of the earth ,

My nature.alas : is defil'd

And a sinner I was from my birth'.

Signed and dated

'1832 Sarah Tomson Her Work Aged 11 Years'.

A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden,

dogs, squirrels and trees,

birds, hearts,

flowers,

fruit trees,

potted flowering plants,

the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk,

beehives,

butterflies

and fruit baskets.

CONDITION: Fair.

A number of holes.

A number of stains and specks.

Some stitch losses to the motifs.

Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.

Stretching is very slightly uneven.

Frame in very good condition, ready to hang.
