1814 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Priestley
George III, dated 1814. 16.5ins by 14.5ins wide. 1814 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Priestley. Framed in an old, gilded, gesso frame with glass.

Glued around the edges only to card, with wooden backing.
The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches.
Meandering leafy border.
Colours dark brown, cream, blue, green, copper, gold and silver.
Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-17.
Verse reads
'Friends are like leaves that on the Trees do grow
In Summer's prosp'rous State much Love they show
But art thou In Adversity? Then they?
Like leaves from Trees in Autumn' fall away'.
Signed and dated
'Mary Priestley Aged 12 years 1814'.
A good set of motifs, including a house, birds,
potted flowering plant,
a church
and fir trees.
CONDITION: Good. No holes.
No stains other than uniform age darkening of the ground.
No stitch losses.
Some colours are faded.
No colour run.
Neatly and evenly stretched.
Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
